The hard palate of the babies mouth massages the milk ducts to maximize the amount of milk the baby gets. This also means an efficient, effective latching for breastfeeding. If baby has a narrow gape, and was right on the tip of the nipple then the nipple would not go far enough to reach the soft palate. If this happens breastfeeding would be painful and often times described as a pinching or bitting feeling.
